What is the South Beach Diet?
The South Beach Diet is a three-phase weight-loss program developed by cardiologist
Dr. Arthur Agatston of South Beach Florida.
Phase I is the most restrictive and lasts for two weeks eliminating grains,
fruit, root vegetables and all added sugars.
Phase II reintroduces fruit, whole grain bread, rice, pasta and more fat-free
milk and yogurt and you remain on this phase until ideal weight is reached.
Phase III is maintenance level for maintaining that ideal weight. After
you have been through the first 2 Phases, you should have learned more about
what foods and serving sizes are best for you and made you a much more intelligent
and healthy eater! This makes it more easier for you to move to Phase III
and helps to set you up for success rather than failure!
The South Beach plan emphasizes
lean proteins, fat-free or low-fat dairy, nuts, eggs, tofu, legumes, healthy
types of fat and low-glycemic-index vegetables. South Beach Dieters are
encouraged to move back and forth between the different phases as needed
to maintain their weight loss and in the early stages, to keep loosing weight.
By following the South Beach diet,
the plan promises positive changes in markers of cardiovascular health,
lower cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, along with increased
HDL cholesterol levels as well as losing an average of 8-12 pounds in the
first 2 weeks!
